History
In 1982, a group of parents in Vermont's Champlain Valley
came together to study Waldorf education. From that
group came a core of enthusiastic parents, eager to
find a way to provide Waldorf education for their children.
With dedication and hard work, they opened the first
preschool class in 1984 at the Trinity Church in Shelburne.
By 1989, the school was ready to add a first grade and
purchased 22 acres of Nature Conservancy land in central
Shelburne on which to build a permanent home. The first
phase of the building was constructed with the warm
and generous support of the surrounding community of
parents, friends and faculty.
Since then, the school population continued to grow with
a new grade added each year. The first eighth grade graduated
in 1996. We now offer a high school program, starting
with a ninth grade in 2001 and adding a grade each year.
Waldorf schools are administered by the faculty and staff
who maintain the integrity of the school through the understanding
of Waldorf education in the light of Rudolf Steiner's
spiritual science, Anthroposophy. A group of faculty and
staff form the College which maintains the philosophical
and spiritual principles underlying Waldorf education
and is responsible for the pedagogy and future development
of the school. The Board of Trustees, made up of faculty,
staff, parents and community members, carries the overall
vision and direction of the school and oversees the legal
and economic life. Parent participation is vital to the
life of the school and a Parent Association supports that
participation.
