Elementary Curriculum

At the heart of the elementary curriculum is the Main Lesson, a two hour period at the beginning of each day which deeply involves the students in a single subject over several weeks.

Main Lesson Subjects by Grade
Grade 1: Fairy and folk tales; foundations of reading and writing; arithmetic; science through nature stories.
Grade 2: Fables, lives of the saints, reading and writing; arithmetic; nature stories.
Grade 3: Old Testament stories; reading and writing, grammar; arithmetic including measurements, practical studies in farming and house building; gardening.
Grade 4: Norse mythology; reading; grammar; composition; arithmetic, including fractions; local history and geography; study of animals.
Grade 5: Ancient civilizations through Greece; reading, grammar, composition; freehand geometric drawing; arithmetic including decimals; US geography; botany; Greek Olympics.
Grade 6: History of Rome and the Middle Ages; reading; grammar, composition; business math; geometric drawing; geography of the Americas; mineralogy;
Grade 7: History of the Renaissance, Reformation and Age of Exploration; reading, grammar, composition; world literature, poetry and drama; perspective drawing; algebra; European and African
geography; physiology, health and nutrition; physics; chemistry.
Grade 8: European History, expansion, revolution and modern times; American history and literature, New England Transcendentalists; grammar, composition; geometry of platonic solids; algebra and volumes; anatomy and physiology; physics; chemistry; Asian geography; major dramatic production.


After the morning's Main Lesson, students study the following subjects:
Grades 1-8: French, German, poetry and drama, painting and drawing, handwork; eurthmy, physical education; outdoor adventure, music
Grades 3 and 4: Group instruction and stringed instruments
Grades 5-8: Instrumental ensemble; chorus; woodworking
